MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION (MBSR) research has consistently demonstrated positive outcomes associated with increased self-awareness; emotion and attention regulation; reduced interference from symptoms for a range of physical and behavioral health conditions including anxiety, depression, and chronic fatigue and pain; and reduction of risk factors for serious chronic conditions.

Course created by Jon-Kabat-Zinn at UMass Medical Center
  • Instructor is certified to teach MBSR  through UMass Center for Mindfulness and has taught over 50 mindfulness courses in the past 10 years
  • No prior meditation experience required--ideal for beginners, and also appropriate for experienced meditators who wish to refresh their practice or go deeper in bringing mindfulness into their everyday life
  • Includes instruction for sitting meditation, body scans, mindful movement, and walking meditation; recordings support establishing a daily meditation practice
  • A core part of the program is applying mindfulness to moments of reactivity, thereby enhancing one's capacity to replace automatic-pilot reactions with a more appropriate response
“Mindfulness is not about living in some mythical, eternal ideal now…. Instead, it is about developing an intentional capacity to meet the present with courage and awareness. In so doing, we begin a process of transforming the mind. As we learn to attend carefully and intentionally to our present-moment world of experience, we can step out of the grip of the impulsivity and reactivity that binds us to distress.”
